The story of our expedition at Holuhraun volcano in Iceland (Bárðarbunga)

Iceland – Oct 11, 2014

We are here. After a long, long journey from Turin trough Paris. Form Paris to London and from London to Reykjavik. From Reykjavik to Akureyri and now, after 7 hours with our jeep we are in this fire storm. The landscape is amazing, unbelievable. I already see the power of icelandic nature in the waterfall, in the glacier, in the wind and in the ocean but never ever see something like this. Directly connected to the Hell.

We passed a lot of controlled station, the first one is the Rescue Team checkpoint where the team has controlled our safe equipment and all the documents. Everything is ok and we can leave the checkpoint to go head with a first police jeep. Over there I can see for the first time the eruption area of  Holuhraun, the Bardarbunga volcano is still live.

It’s a little bit snowing, a perfect condition for a first photo taken from my iPhone. Ice and fire!

I’m really exited and like me also my team: the Iceland Review journalist Pall and Zoe. With me also the photographer Luis Emile (from Australia). The weather conditions are perfect fro photography: a little bit cold (- 10°), a little bit of wind (it’s ok also to fly with my drone) and a little bit of snow that’s perfect because give a magic atmosphere to the hell of fire.

We arrived closer to the volcano late in the afternoon: no words. No comments. Just look, I’m here… in the middle of anything, near Askja that is my favorite place in Iceland. I can ask no more.

Ok, go: it’s time to work! The camera, my Nikon D810 with 14-24mm f2.8, is ready to shoot. My GoPro in powered on and my Phantom 2 drone is ready to fly! Let’s fly on the Bardarbunga!

Just a quickly check of the footage… great! It seems to be ok!! It’s 22:30 and it’s time to come back at Askja for the night. It’s cold, it’s hard snowing but I’m satisfied. I’m here, what else.
